Student Support

In addition to our Instructional Programs, Johnsburg School District 12 offers a number of services to our students through faculty and staff members specialized, and in many times, licensed in their specialty field.  Some of the services we offer include:

Adaptive Physical Education
Adapted physical education assists in the development and implementation of a physical education program designed to meet the needs of a student with a disability. The purpose of adapted physical education is to give an individual the skills necessary for a lifetime of leisure, recreation, and sport experiences to enhance physical fitness and wellness. The APE teacher has knowledge of motor characteristics, behaviors, and developmental sequences associated with various disabilities in relation to typical motor development.

Occupational Therapy
The Occupational Therapy Department provides services to students who demonstrate fine-motor or sensory-motor difficulties that impact their ability to participate in educational activities. Therapeutic intervention may focus on educating others, increasing the student’s skills, modifying the environment, adapting task expectations, utilizing adaptive equipment, or a combination of the above.

Physical Therapy
Physical Therapists in the school setting work with children to enable them to access and participate in their educational environment. Therapeutic intervention may focus on seating and positioning, equipment needs, transportation, and other areas of the school environment.

Resource Program

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act 2004 (IDEIA 2004) provides for a free appropriate public education (FAPE) for all individuals with disabilities between the ages of 3 and 21. In order to be responsive to the diverse educational needs of students, the Special Education Department of District #12 provides a continuum of services to be considered when determining the appropriate educational program for a student. These services are determined by the IEP team according to the needs of the student.
• Resource services are provided for students who require special education for less than 50% of the school day.
• Instructional classrooms are available to students who require special education services for more than 50% of the school day.
• Private placements may be appropriate to meet the needs of some students.

Speech and Language Therapy
The Speech and Language Department provides quality therapeutic services to students who exhibit needs in the area of communication. Our mission is to enable students to utilize strategies and techniques to achieve success in academics and social interactions. We strive to integrate the strategies taught, so that meaningful learning opportunities occur across a variety of school and community settings. Our objective is to advance effective communicators who can pursue their goals with confidence. Students may receive direct services from the teacher in a pull-out or integrated model and/or consultation or monitor only.

Mental Health Services
The Counseling & Social Work Departments are committed to assisting students, parents, and faculty in creating a healthy learning environment for students. Our mission is to provide a supportive and caring environment for students. We strive to assist students in their growth academically, socially, and emotionally throughout their years. We provide individual and group counseling for students during the school day.

Hearing and Vision Services
The Hearing & Vision Department provides services to students whose hearing impairment or visual disability impacts their ability to benefit from their educational environment. The teacher travels to the students' assigned school and provides instruction in the areas affected by the hearing or vision impairment. Instruction is provided to address the deficit areas, increase understanding of the hearing or visual impairment, develop the students’ understanding of assistive devices, and maximize the use of the auditory and visual channels. Students may receive direct services from the teacher in a pull-out or integrated model and/or consultation or monitor only.

Health Services
Nursing staff assist students in many ways during the school day to create a healthy learning environment for all students.  A licensed or registered nurse is on duty at all district schools whenever students are in attendance.  They provide daily medical services, instruction/consultation on medical disabilities to staff members and perform screening services for vision and hearing.
